Nintendo is practically the only brand that has as many games as characters that at least deserve a remake of their games. At the time of the Super Nintendo, the big N ventured with Square (later renamed Square Enix) to release an RPG, today twenty-seven years after the release of the original a remake for Nintendo Switch saw the light of the sun, and we tell you all about it.

Development:

The story happens when Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach again, Mario as always goes to her rescue, however, in his confrontation with Bowser, a strange supernatural force takes over Bowser’s castle expelling Mario and Bowser from it.

Later we learn that this villain who crashed into Bowser’s castle is Smithy an evil being who stole the seven stars of the Star Road world; for that we will have to face his lackeys to recover the stars to finally face Smithy.

The gameplay is a kind of turn-based RPG game, challenging and difficult, one of those RPG games in which trusting a moment means death. That is why in this kind of games it is always advisable to carry potions to recover both mana or magic points PM, as well as life points PV, nothing is left over in these games, and spending items to always be healthy is the best option.

Mario will have many characters to help him in his adventure as the same Princess Peach, and there are even new characters in the title as Geno and Mallow, each character will have different powers or magic, either electricity, fire and so on. Example Mario can use his classic jumps, throw fireballs, Mallow instead use lightning attacks, these magics and skills are learned by leveling up over the course of the game, when leveling up we can not only learn new skills but also have to decide how to distribute the points earned, and for that our wisdom will come into play as we will have to say between increasing vitality, defense, magic attack or magic defense, these points will give us different statistics to our characters, and much will depend on the outcome of future battles.

Another point to highlight is that each enemy is weak to certain attack, and although this was just implemented in the early days of the RPG is admirable to see how many years ago the laws of nature were applied to this unique world full of fantasy as are the RPG, with this I mean for example that the fish will be weak electrical attacks because they live in water, and water as we know is conductive of electricity.

Remake, graphics and creativity.

The graphics in this remake are very well taken care of, and although they try not to move away from the original, the HD and Full HD aspect that they achieve in the Nintendo Switch console is amazing. The creativity does not falter either and I must admit that I was not lucky enough to play this game in my childhood on a Super Nintendo, so I was very surprised with the puzzles and various scenarios never seen before in the Mario saga, one of the ones I liked the most is the tadpole pond where we will have to solve a fun puzzle to move forward.

We will also have to get around all kinds of mazes in the game and each level represents a new challenge to overcome. The bosses and enemies are spread out, many will be already known from the Mario saga, however, we will meet new faces, which is simply spectacular.

The weak point:

The only weak point in my opinion is the non-inclusion of new things, it would have been very nice some side missions for this remake, there are surprises, but it was tried to keep the originality more than anything.

Conclusion:

Super Mario RPG closes with a flourish a memorable year for Nintendo, full of incredible games.

Grade: 9. Excellent
